Recently, Liverpool made contact with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak.
The Premier League champions wanted to part ways with Darwin Nunez and sign Alexander Isak as his replacement.
The Reds are tired of waiting for Nunez to shine. Since signing for Liverpool in 2022, he scored only 40 goals in 143 appearances. The Uruguayan also provided 26 assists.
However, those numbers are not enough. When compared those numbers with Isak, the difference is huge.
Alexander Isak made 109 appearances for Newcastle and scored 62 times. Last season, the Swedish international scored 27 goals for the Magpies in 42 appearances.
On the other hand, Darwin Nunez scored only 7 times even though he appeared 47 times for Liverpool.
So, it clearly shows why Liverpool want to part ways with the Uruguayan.
However, Newcastle have a firm stance when it comes to Isak. They don’t want to sell their star striker.
Liverpool are ready to pay £120 million. But the Magpies are not ready to budge.
But that is not why Liverpool suffered the Alexander Isak transfer setback.
Liverpool are yet to make an official bid for the player.
Something happened overnight that could change how Liverpool would approach this Alexander Isak deal completely.
Liverpool’s main aim was to sell Darwin Nunez and the main suitor for the player was Napoli.
The Reds were reportedly asking for a fee of around €60 million.
However, Napoli have informed the Premier League champions that they are not pursuing this Darwin Nunez deal anymore.
According to Sky Sports (via FootMercato), the Serie A champions have signed Lorenzo Lucca.
So, they will not be signing Nunez this summer.
Now, Liverpool will have to find another buyer for Darwin Nunez. Otherwise, they might struggle to sign Alexander Isak.
Also, Newcastle’s stance is clear; the player is not for sale.
