Liverpool make decision on Virgil van Dijk’s future amid transfer speculations

Liverpool have entered a new era after appointing Andoni Iraola as head coach following a disappointing 2025–26 campaign.

The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League, exited both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage, and ended the season without silverware.

The club has already undergone major changes this summer. Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate departed on free transfers, while Mohamed Salah is also left the club.

Liverpool have responded by signing Victor Munoz from Osasuna, although they could miss out on top attacking target Yan Diomande after the teenager chose Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds have since switched their attention to Bradley Barcola and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Malik Tillman as Iraola continues reshaping his squad.

Virgil van Dijk also comes into the summer after another demanding campaign for club and country.

The Liverpool captain played every minute of the Premier League season and remained one of the team’s most reliable performers despite their disappointing finish.

He also captained the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring against Japan and providing an assist against Tunisia.

However, the Dutch suffered a penalty-shootout exit to Morocco in the Round of 32.

Despite recently signing a lucrative new contract, Van Dijk’s future has become the subject of growing speculation.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool no longer consider the Dutch defender “untouchable”. They are now prepared to assess any serious offers that arrive for their captain.

Interest is building from several clubs. AC Milan, now managed by Ruben Amorim, have made enquiries through intermediaries after identifying Van Dijk as a dream signing.

Turkish rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are also monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, clubs in the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer continue to keep a close watch on Van Dijk.

However, Liverpool are not actively looking to sell Van Dijk. Iraola is currently assessing every senior player before making final decisions.

For now, Van Dijk remains at Anfield, but Liverpool have made it clear that they are willing to listen if they receive the right offer.
