Liverpool suffer transfer blow as Marc Guehi opens talks with European giants

For Liverpool, it marks a significant blow in their hunt for a new centre-back.

Arne Slot, Marc Guehi

Liverpool started their Premier League title defence with 5 wins in a row. However, they lost their next two games to Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

On top of that, their defence looks shaky. One of the major reasons is the injuries to both Giovanni Leoni and Ibrahima Konate.

The Reds will now depend on Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez. In case either of the two gets injured, then they might have to play Wataru Endo as the centre-back.

This is one of the main reasons why Arne Slot was so desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi came close to joining the Reds during the summer. But he is now in advanced discussions with one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

There were reports that Liverpool would go back for Guehi as he would be available as a free-agent in the summer next year.

So, Guehi can start having discussions with non-English clubs from January. With So many European clubs showing interest, chances of Liverpool signing Guehi will be slim.

The England international has been on Liverpool’s radar for over a year.

However, according to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have now entered the race and are showing concrete interest in signing the 24-year-old.

For Liverpool, that creates a major problem. Bayern could now strike an early deal with Guehi to join on a free transfer next summer.

Reports also suggest that Barcelona and Real Madrid are monitoring the situation closely.

For Liverpool, however, it marks a significant blow in their hunt for a new centre-back. Bayern now look to have taken control of the race.
