Manchester City are preparing for a new era following another successful period under Pep Guardiola.
With Enzo Maresca expected to take charge, the club have already started planning significant changes to ensure they remain at the top of English and European football.
Midfield remains one of the biggest priorities for City this summer. The club have been searching for a long-term solution capable of leading the next generation.
As a result, City have spent months monitoring several midfield targets. The player who has emerged as their leading option is Elliot Anderson.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City are edging closer to completing a British record deal for the Nottingham Forest midfielder.
The report states that Nottingham Forest have already rejected two offers from City.
However, talks between the two clubs remain ongoing and further discussions are scheduled within the next 24 hours.
Forest are reportedly demanding a package worth close to £130 million for Anderson.
If completed, the transfer would become one of the most expensive deals in football history and surpass the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak.
The fee would also eclipse the £105 million Arsenal spent on Declan Rice. So, Anderson will become the most expensive British player ever. Manchester United have also shown interest in Anderson.
However, the report claims Anderson has long been City’s preferred midfield target after the club identified him as a key part of their future plans.
City believe the 23-year-old possesses the qualities needed to thrive in the style expected under Maresca.
His performances since joining Nottingham Forest have established him as one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest signed Anderson from Newcastle United two years ago in a deal worth a net £15 million.
