Some transfer races reach a moment where the direction becomes clear.

The Elliot Anderson saga has reached exactly that moment.

And right now, everything is pointing toward the Etihad.

Manchester City leading race for Elliot Anderson as British transfer record looms

According to the BBC, Manchester City are leading the race to sign Anderson, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder understood to be leaning toward a move to the Etihad over rivals Manchester United.

The clubs remain far apart on their valuation.

But the expectation is growing, inside and outside the City Ground, that Anderson will leave this summer.

And if he does, the fee could become a new record for a British player, eclipsing the £105 million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice back in 2023.

Manchester United’s position has become the decisive factor in City’s favour.

They’re unwilling to get drawn into protracted negotiations.

And with the clubs far apart on valuation, there’s a growing sense that United will step back rather than stretch beyond what they consider a fair price.

Manchester City appear more willing to absorb the cost.

The context around Anderson’s situation at Forest matters too.

There is a clear feeling inside the club that if a major sale happens this summer Anderson is the most likely departure.

Nottingham Forest finished 16th in the Premier League this season.

No European football at the City Ground next year.

For a player of Anderson’s ambition, a Champions League regular for whichever club signs him, that context is significant.

Manager Vitor Pereira has been admirably direct about all of it.

He said Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White deserve “the top of the world.”

He acknowledged he’d prefer to keep both.

“We cannot control the market, of course,” he said.

“But I think we are aligned, what I think and what the club thinks is to try to keep most of them and to try to control the market.”

That’s a manager making peace with a situation he knows may be beyond his control.

Anderson made his 50th appearance of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday, a 1-1 draw, and was given a standing ovation from the City Ground crowd when he was substituted in the second half.

It felt like a goodbye, even if nobody wanted to say it out loud.

Especially as the only other club, outside of his own, he follows on Instagram is Manchester City.

The 23-year-old joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in 2024 for £35 million and has made 92 appearances since.

He won the European Under-21 Championship with England last summer.

A strong World Cup this summer would only strengthen Forest’s bargaining position further.

But the direction of travel already feels clear.

Anderson is heading for a move, and Manchester City are leading.
