Midfields don’t last forever.
Even the best ones.
That is where Manchester City find themselves; at a turning point, with Rodri’s future uncertain.
Because for years, control has defined them.
One constant at the base of everything.
But now, there are questions.
And where there are questions, plans follow.
Manchester City eye £200m midfield duo
According to TeamTalk, Manchester City are preparing a huge midfield rebuild worth close to £200 million, with Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson identified as key targets to reshape the core of the side.
Two signings, both capable of redefining how the team functions in possession and without it.
City believe both Tonali and Anderson could arrive as part of that transition, though the combined cost reflects just how significant this shift would be.
Tonali brings control; progression through midfield.
A player comfortable dictating tempo but also breaking lines when needed.
Anderson offers something different.
A more direct presence between the lines; an engine complimenting Rodri or Nico Gonzalez.
Together, it’s a new look.
But the reasoning behind it matters more than the names.
Rodri’s future is no longer completely certain. Reports suggest Real Madrid are seriously interested, with talks over a new deal paused and both sides open to assessing the situation.
That alone shifts everything.
Because replacing Rodri is not straightforward. It is not even realistic in like-for-like terms.
His role is too specific, and although Nico Gonzalez has stepped up when necessary, replacing the Ballon D’or winner is easier said than done.
So instead, City may look to evolve.
Change the structure rather than replicate it.
Bernardo Silva’s situation also remains a problem.
Uncertainty remains around his long-term future, adding further weight to the idea that this midfield could look very different by the start of next season.
That explains the price.
Because if two key figures move on, one signing is not enough.
It becomes a rebuild.
City aren’t waiting for departures to happen.
They’re positioning themselves early, knowing they’ll be competing in all fronts next season.
