Manuel Neuer announces retirement

Some careers defy every expectation of how long they can last.

Fractured leg in a skiing accident.

Multiple surgeries.

A World Cup penalty defeat at 40 years old.

And still, Manuel Neuer kept going.

Until now.

Manuel Neuer drops clearest retirement hint yet as Bayern Munich legend signals end of career

According to BILD, Neuer has all but confirmed that the upcoming 2026-27 season will be his final campaign as a professional footballer with a clarity that removes almost all doubt about what comes next.

“It certainly looks very much like it,” he told reporters when asked whether this would be his last year playing.

He signed a one-year extension in May.

One year.

However, the decision was deliberate.

Not a multi-year contract that would require another announcement down the line.

A single season that gives him the chance to end his career on his own terms, at the club where he became the greatest goalkeeper of his generation.

Neuer was careful with his words in the way only a player who has thought deeply about them can be.

“I don’t play the matches just to say, ‘This is my last game,'” he said.

“It doesn’t matter whether this might have been my last time at one stadium or another, we’ll see.”

The context surrounding this moment is impossible to separate from what happened at the World Cup.

Germany were eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay on penalties.

Neuer had come out of international retirement specifically for that tournament.

Persuaded back by Julian Nagelsmann on the promise of going deep and closing his international career in the right way.

It didn’t happen.

He confirmed his international retirement on the pitch in Boston, when a television reporter asked him simply whether this was his last game.

One word.

“Yes.”

The career numbers are extraordinary in every dimension.

More than 500 appearances for Bayern Munich.

Eleven Bundesliga titles.

Two Champions Leagues.

124 caps for Germany.

A World Cup winner’s medal from Brazil in 2014, where he was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

And a style of goalkeeping.

Sweeping, commanding, functioning as an eleventh outfield player.

Something that changed the position permanently and inspired an entire generation of sweeper keepers who followed in his wake.

One more season.

Then it’s over.
