Newcastle United on verge of signing £50M Manchester City midfielder

Newcastle are now closing in on another significant midfield addition.

Newcastle United have entered a new era under Matthias Jaissle following a significant overhaul during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies endured a difficult preseason campaign and failed to win any of their final warm-up matches.

They suffered defeats against Everton and Bayer Leverkusen before drawing 1-1 with Strasbourg in the VisitMalta Cup.

However, Newcastle produced an encouraging performance in their Premier League opener against Liverpool at St. James’ Park.

Goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock helped Newcastle secure a dramatic 2-2 draw despite a late Liverpool penalty.

Meanwhile, the club have made major changes to their squad following several high-profile departures during the summer window.

Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100m, while Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal in a £75m move.

Anthony Gordon also completed a £69.3m transfer to Barcelona, while Kieran Trippier departed after his contract expired.

The Magpies responded by targeting younger additions, including Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba and Amar Dedic.

They also completed a move for teenage Ajax midfielder Sean Steur as Jaissle continued rebuilding his squad.

However, Newcastle are now closing in on another significant midfield addition before the transfer window shuts.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez for around £50 million.

The report claims personal terms have already been agreed, while a club-to-club agreement is now close.

Jaissle also played an important role by holding a personal conversation with Gonzalez to secure his approval for the move.

That discussion reportedly reassured Gonzalez about his potential role at St. James’ Park and Newcastle’s ambitions under Jaissle.

Manchester City are prepared to sanction his departure as they continue reshaping their midfield during the summer window.

Newcastle and Manchester City have held constructive talks, and both clubs could finalise the agreement. After that, Gonzalez will have his medical and complete the remaining formalities ahead of joining Newcastle.
