Yesterday saw the end of the summer transfer window for most of Europe.
Plenty of high level deals happened – such as Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
Whilst high level deals also did not happen – such as Marc Guehi to Liverpool.
Despite the player having a medical, Palace being unable to find a replacement meant the deal was off.
Manager Oliver Glasner was absolutely hellbent on keeping the defender at the club, and got his wish.
With Eberchi Eze having departed just days earlier, they could not afford to lose another key man.
It was well documented that Spurs had tried for Eze, but the player opted for rivals Arsenal instead.
But he was not the only Palace player that they had tried for.
According to TBR Football, Thomas Frank’s side had asked about midfielder Adam Wharton towards the end of the window.
Although there has been far less noise than with Eze and Guehi, the 21-year old has had a lot of interest over the last year or so.
But there was no chance of Palace letting him go this summer, and the player is happy at the club.
Wharton had made a positive start to the season with his performances.
He was rewarded with a first England call up since Euro 2024.
However, sod’s law kicked in, and he injured his groin in a 3-0 win away to Aston Villa on Sunday.
Since then, he has pulled out of the squad, and been replaced by long term international absentee Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Nevertheless, if he can get fit as soon as possible, the familiarity at Palace will set him in good stead.
Joining another side, with another manager, new team mates, and a different system would have been a risk.
At Palace, he can play every week, in a system he knows very well.
In a World Cup year, this feels like his best option right now.
After the tournament next summer, he will no doubt have his pick of clubs, and will still be just 22-years old.
At Spurs he would have no doubt been a good fit. They are a side lacking progressive passes from deep.
But the continuity at Palace feels the safe bet for him as the World Cup approaches.
Whilst the injury is frustrating, it is encouraging that Thomas Tuchel had originally selected him for this break.
