Tottenham Hotspur endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign before eventually securing Premier League survival on the final day.
Cristian Romero captained Spurs during that turbulent season, although injuries and inconsistent performances disrupted his campaign.
A knee problem in April also sidelined the defender during the closing stages. However, Romero produced a much stronger run of performances for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 28-year-old became an important figure in Argentina’s defence and helped his country reach the final.
Romero also scored against Egypt before Argentina eventually suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat against Spain.
Consequently, Romero’s performances have attracted significant transfer interest as Tottenham prepare to reshape their squad under Roberto De Zerbi.
Inter Milan have emerged as a potential destination, while Barcelona have also shown interest in the Argentina international.
According to Sportitalia, Tottenham Hotspur have now accepted that Romero is likely to leave and have offered the centre-back to Inter Milan.
More importantly, Spurs have softened their transfer stance after initially demanding around £43M for their captain.
Tottenham are now ready to lower their asking price and show greater flexibility over the structure of a potential deal.
That change could open the door to a loan agreement containing an obligation to buy.
Meanwhile, Inter have already made promising contact with Tottenham as they explore an agreement. Romero is also open to joining the Serie A champions.
Barcelona remain interested, but they need to sell one of their current centre-backs before making further progress.
Therefore, Inter currently have an opportunity to push ahead while Barcelona remain unable to make an immediate move. But a transfer is still considered complicated and far from completion.
Tottenham’s willingness to reduce their demands has nevertheless increased optimism that an agreement can eventually be reached.
