Tottenham Hotspur set sights on 52-goal LaLiga striker for January

A January move could become a serious possibility as Tottenham search for a solution to their attacking problems.

Tottenham Hotspur could return to the transfer market after a disastrous start to the season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side remain winless after five Premier League matches. They have collected just two points and sit bottom of the table. That poor start comes despite an enormous summer rebuild.

Spurs spent more than £300 million on new players. Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes represented their biggest investments.

Jan Paul van Hecke also strengthened the defence. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka arrived on free transfers. However, Tottenham Hotspur have struggled badly in attack.

According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have now stepped up their interest in Espanyol striker Roberto Fernandez.

The 24-year-old has moved to the top of Tottenham’s attacking shortlist. The club have conducted detailed scouting work on him in recent months.

Fernandez initially caught their attention last season after scoring seven goals for Espanyol.

His performances have improved considerably this term. The striker has scored six times across his opening seven matches.

That form also earned Fernandez his first senior Spain call-up. He made his international debut against Czechia during the latest break. Across his career, Fernandez has scored 52 goals in 207 appearances.

Tottenham believe his physical qualities could suit Premier League football. His direct running and ability to lead the attack have also impressed their recruitment department.

Spurs are expected to pursue another attacker when the January window opens. Omar Marmoush joined during the summer, but Tottenham do not view him as a traditional central striker.

Dominic Solanke has also struggled for form. No Tottenham attacker has scored a Premier League goal this season. Signing Fernandez could allow Marmoush to operate deeper or from the left.

Chelsea and Brighton are also monitoring the Espanyol forward. Fernandez is not Tottenham’s only option. However, his impressive start has pushed him firmly towards the top of De Zerbi’s shortlist.

A January move could therefore become a serious possibility as Tottenham search for a solution to their attacking problems.
