Tottenham Hotspur suffer setback in pursuit of World Cup star

Tottenham have also been linked with Cody Gakpo and Savinho in recent weeks.

Tottenham Hotspur remain determined to strengthen their squad before the summer transfer window closes as Roberto De Zerbi continues reshaping his team.

The club have already invested heavily in several areas of the pitch, but further reinforcements remain a priority ahead of the new Premier League season.

One position Spurs are still looking to improve is the left wing. De Zerbi is eager to add another attacking option, although completing that objective has become increasingly difficult in recent days.

Reports over the weekend claimed Tottenham had submitted a package worth up to €55 million (£47 million) for their preferred target.

However, the latest developments suggest the North London club face a major obstacle if they want to complete the deal before the transfer deadline.

According to Record (via Sport Witness), Tottenham remain interested in signing Andreas Schjelderup. But Benfica will only consider selling the Norway international if they receive a “truly extraordinary” offer.

The Portuguese club believe the 22-year-old’s value has increased significantly following an outstanding 2026 World Cup and his impressive finish to last season.

Benfica’s new head coach Marco Silva also views Schjelderup as one of the cornerstones of his project. So, it makes a transfer even more difficult.

However, the report also states that no formal offer has yet arrived that has forced the Portuguese side to reconsider their position.

Schjelderup enhanced his reputation during the 2026 World Cup by scoring against England while showcasing his direct running, creativity and attacking quality.

Tottenham have also been linked with Cody Gakpo and Savinho in recent weeks.

However, Benfica’s latest stance suggests Spurs may have to increase their offer considerably to sign Schjelderup before the transfer window closes.
