In football, absences are usually straightforward.
Whether it’s injuries or suspensions, the cause is almost apparent.
But sometimes, the unexpected disrupts everything.
Moments that cannot be planned for.
Situations that force a club to pause and reassess, even if only briefly.
And when it involves a key figure, the impact is felt immediately, both on and off the pitch.
That is exactly what Newcastle have had to deal with.
Newcastle star deals with ‘highly infectious’ disease
According to The Sun, Bruno Guimaraes has been placed into isolation after being diagnosed with mumps, a highly infectious disease, forcing him to miss Newcastle’s recent derby defeat.
The midfielder reportedly first noticed symptoms after returning from a flight, initially believing it to be a minor allergic reaction.
However, the situation quickly escalated, leading to further checks and eventually a confirmed diagnosis.
That changed everything, immediately.
Isolation was required. Around five days away from others, with an extended period away from physical activity expected as a precaution.
For Newcastle, the timing could not have been worse.
They were without one of their most influential players in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, a match they went on to lose 2-1.
The absence was noticeable.
The control in midfield was missing.
Guimaraes has been central to Newcastle’s progression in recent seasons.
His presence in midfield brings structure, composure, and energy. Without him, the balance shifts; not in a good way.
The club, however, are taking no risks.
Health comes first, with manager Eddie Howe already making it clear that the focus remains entirely on recovery rather than rushing a return.
Still, questions remain.
When will he be back?
How quickly can he regain full fitness?
And how will Newcastle cope in the meantime?
