Michael Carrick outlines Manchester United’s summer transfer plan

United still have multiple players nearing the end of their contracts.

Michael Carrick has offered a clear insight into Manchester United’s plans ahead of the summer window. The interim boss addressed key contract situations within the squad.

However, the focus is not just on new signings. Several internal decisions still need to be made, including the one on Carrick’s future.

Meanwhile, one situation appears to be moving in the right direction. Kobbie Mainoo is close to agreeing a new contract. Carrick confirmed the progress. He said (The Guardian):

“We’d like to think so, and it’s getting closer, so we’re positive with that.”

At the same time, the club are not rushing. Mainoo’s current deal runs until 2027. That gives United time to negotiate calmly.

However, United still have multiple players nearing the end of their contracts. So, they have to make a decision soon.

Meanwhile, Casemiro’s exit has already been confirmed. But three other players remain uncertain.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton, left-back Tyrell Malacia, and winger Jadon Sancho are all approaching the end of their deals. Carrick admitted the situation is still unresolved. He said:

“Coming to the summer, there’s contracts… it’s not been sorted out just yet.”

Meanwhile, each case presents a different challenge. Heaton remains a valued figure in the squad. Despite limited appearances, he plays an important role. So, a short extension could still be possible.

However, Malacia’s situation is more complicated. Injuries have limited his impact in recent seasons. He has played just 323 minutes since 2023.

At the same time, his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven did not improve his case. Keeping him may not make financial sense.

Meanwhile, Sancho’s case is even more difficult. United paid £73 million for him, but his performances have not justified that fee.

His high wages also create a problem. Reports suggest he earns up to £300,000 per week. United could activate a one-year extension. However, selling him would still be difficult.

Now, with several key decisions ahead, Carrick has made one thing clear. Manchester United’s summer will focus heavily on contracts and squad reshaping.
