Bruno Fernandes could not hide his frustration after Manchester United’s defeat to Leeds United. The midfielder reacted strongly following a controversial night at Old Trafford.
However, the result itself was already damaging. United lost 2-1 as Leeds ended a 45-year unbeaten league run at the stadium.
Meanwhile, Noah Okafor proved decisive. His first-half brace gave Leeds a strong advantage. At the same time, United’s problems worsened in the second half.
Lisandro Martinez was sent off in the 56th minute. The decision quickly became the main talking point. Referee Paul Tierney showed a red card after a VAR review.
The footage showed Martinez pulling the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Casemiro did manage to pull one goal back. That gave United some hope late in the match.
However, Leeds held on to secure a vital win. But attention soon shifted to Fernandes’ reaction. When asked about the referee, he chose his words carefully. He said:
“I am not talking about the referee. If I talk about the ref I am going to get in very big trouble.
“The rules are different for everyone… it’s better that I don’t say anything.”
The response immediately reminded fans of Jose Mourinho.
The former United boss once delivered a similar line after a controversial defeat in 2014. Mourinho had said at the time:
“I prefer not to speak… If I speak, I am in big trouble.”
