Michael Carrick has provided a key update ahead of Manchester United’s important trip to Chelsea. The match could have major implications for European qualification.

However, there are fresh concerns over one of United’s most important players. Kobbie Mainoo is facing a late fitness test.

The midfielder missed the recent defeat against Leeds after picking up a minor injury in training. Meanwhile, Carrick remains hopeful but cautious. He said during press conference:

“Kobbie is working a little bit towards it… so there’s a decision to be made there.”

That leaves his availability uncertain heading into the clash at Stamford Bridge. At the same time, Mainoo has been a key figure in recent weeks. He has played a major role since Carrick took charge.

However, United are dealing with multiple issues. Patrick Dorgu is still unavailable as he continues his recovery. Matthijs de Ligt is also set to miss out.

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez remains suspended. He will serve the final game of his three-match ban. Harry Maguire is also unavailable, leaving United short at the back.

That could force Carrick into a defensive reshuffle. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are expected to start at centre-back. Meanwhile, Carrick praised Heaven’s development.

He said the young defender is “well ahead of schedule” and progressing strongly. At the same time, he admitted both defenders are still developing. They are not yet long-term solutions.

Now, Mainoo’s fitness could prove crucial for United’s chances. And with a late decision expected, Michael Carrick faces a key call ahead of the Chelsea clash.
