Some transfer situations resist a clean resolution no matter how long they run.
And the Marcus Rashford saga is proving to be one of the most complicated of the summer.
Barcelona request shock second Rashford loan
According to the Mirror, Barcelona have approached Manchester United with a proposal to extend Rashford’s loan deal into a second season; an audacious counter-offer that has left Old Trafford weighing up a decision they didn’t anticipate having to make.
Barcelona have a £26 million option to buy Rashford permanently this summer, a clause agreed when the initial loan deal was struck last summer.
They’ve been covering his wages throughout.
But their financial position has led them to push back on those terms, seeking a discount on the agreed fee or, failing that, an alternative arrangement entirely.
Manchester United have rejected any attempt to renegotiate.
INEOS have been firm. Barcelona either meet it, or they don’t.
The second loan proposal is effectively Barcelona’s way of finding a third path, one that keeps Rashford in Spain without committing to the full permanent fee.
There’s no answer from United yet.
However, the feeling around the club is that they want a clean sale this summer, not another year of uncertainty.
And Rashford himself wants to stay in Spain.
He’s contributed 12 goals and 13 assists across all competitions this season, with Barcelona running clear at the top of La Liga.
Manager Hansi Flick has spoken openly about wanting to keep him.
A return to Old Trafford looks unlikely for everyone involved.
If Barcelona won’t pay the agreed fee and United won’t lower it, there are other potential buyers who could enter the picture.
AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with interest should the Barcelona move fall through entirely.
However, for Rashford, the clock is ticking on one of the most important decisions of his career.
