Some summers define what a club is trying to become.

A deliberate, structured overhaul, with a budget that signals real intent.

That’s exactly what’s being planned at Old Trafford this summer.

Manchester United set to spend £150m on three new midfielders

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are ready to commit up to £150 million on three central midfield signings this summer, as the club prepares for a return to Champions League football after a two-year absence.

The foundation for the rebuild has already been laid.

Casemiro is leaving when his contract expires in June, a departure that has been coming for some time and one that Manchester United have planned around accordingly.

Manuel Ugarte is also expected to leave.

Two out, and three in.

The marquee signing sits at the top of the list, around £80 million allocated for a world-class Casemiro replacement.

Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest is the primary target for that role.

However, Manchester City are currently seen as the frontrunners.

Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that a Serie A midfielder is on the shortlist, though that name hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The funds to make all of this happen won’t come from nowhere.

Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford are both expected to generate significant fees this summer.

And Manuel Ugarte’s sale will add to the pot.

Champions League prize money, secured after Sunday’s extraordinary 3-2 win over Liverpool, now flows into a budget that was already more flexible than it’s been in years.

The question of who manages the rebuild is still technically open.

But Michael Carrick is expected to be confirmed as permanent manager, with two key factors said to have convinced Ratcliffe that the job is his.

Whoever sits in that dugout next season will inherit a squad being built with genuine ambition.

And the midfield is where it all starts.
