Arsenal moved one step closer to the Premier League title after securing a huge victory over West Ham United.
The Gunners knew they could not afford any mistakes. It is because Manchester City are still chasing them in the final weeks of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side eventually secured all three points after a tense afternoon in London. However, the closing moments almost turned disastrous for Arsenal.
West Ham thought they had rescued a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time after Callum Wilson found the back of the net. But Arsenal players immediately surrounded the referee.
After a lengthy VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh eventually ruled the goal out after deciding the Arsenal goalkeeper had been impeded.
That moment not only protected Arsenal’s title hopes but also secured a huge personal achievement for their number one.
With the clean sheet confirmed, David Raya officially won the Premier League Golden Glove award for the third consecutive season.
The Spaniard has now kept 18 clean sheets in 36 league appearances this campaign, enough to mathematically guarantee the award with two games still remaining.
Only three other goalkeepers in Premier League history have managed to win the Golden Glove in three straight seasons. They are Pepe Reina, Joe Hart and Ederson.
Raya’s consistency since arriving from Brentford has become one of the foundations behind Arsenal’s rise under Arteta.
He recorded 16 clean sheets during his first season at the Emirates before following that with another strong campaign last year. Now, he has produced his best Premier League season yet.
Also, no goalkeeper in England has kept more clean sheets than Raya since the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
The Spaniard has registered 67 clean sheets during that period for both Brentford and Arsenal. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson sits behind him with 59.
If Raya wins the award again next season, he will join Petr Cech and Joe Hart as the only goalkeepers to claim four Premier League Golden Gloves.
