The midfield rebuild for Manchester United continues gathering pace behind the scenes as the club searches for the perfect replacement for Casemiro.
The Brazilian already left Old Trafford this summer after playing his last game against Nottingham Forest.
So, this forces United to prioritise signing a top-level midfielder ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign. Several names already appeared on the club’s shortlist during recent weeks.
Ederson, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson all attracted serious interest from the Red Devils.
However, one midfielder reportedly stands above everybody else internally at Manchester United.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via Footmercato), Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni is viewed as Manchester United’s dream midfield signing.
The French international reportedly remains the ideal profile to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield ahead of next season.
Manchester United believe Tchouameni possesses exactly the qualities needed to replace Casemiro long-term. The French international also replaced Casemiro at Real Madrid.
Interest from Old Trafford first emerged earlier this summer, and Romano now claims Manchester United still have not abandoned hopes of completing the transfer.
However, the deal currently looks extremely difficult. Real Madrid reportedly have no intention of allowing the French midfielder to leave despite recent speculation surrounding his future.
Tchouameni recently found himself involved in controversy after a dressing room altercation with teammate Federico Valverde.
The incident created major headlines in Spain after Valverde reportedly required hospital treatment afterwards. Despite that situation, Real Madrid still fully trust the French midfielder moving forward.
Real Madrid protected themselves heavily when Tchouameni signed his current contract until 2028.
The deal reportedly includes a massive €1 billion release clause, making any possible transfer extremely complicated for interested clubs.
Still, Manchester United reportedly continue monitoring the situation closely. And while Real Madrid currently consider Tchouameni untouchable, United have not completely given up their hopes.
