Aston Villa are already planning major improvements to their squad after securing Champions League football once again under Unai Emery.
The club qualified for Europe’s biggest competition for the second time in three seasons and now attention has quickly shifted towards strengthening the squad for another demanding campaign.
Villa want to add more pace and attacking threat to Emery’s frontline this summer. However, the club still need to remain careful with spending because of financial regulations.
That means Villa’s transfer activity will likely depend heavily on player sales before they make several big moves in the market.
Morgan Rogers remains one player attracting serious interest, with reports suggesting Villa could consider offers worth around £80 million.
Meanwhile, Emery also wants to strengthen multiple positions across the squad. A new midfielder, goalkeeper and winger are all understood to be priorities heading into the transfer window.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes has emerged as a serious target for Villa.
The 28-year-old reportedly sits on Aston Villa’s shortlist as Emery searches for more speed and direct attacking quality.
Barnes enjoyed an impressive season at Newcastle, scoring 16 goals across all competitions, including six in the Champions League.
Villa believe his pace and versatility could make them even more dangerous on counter-attacks next season.
The England international can operate on either wing despite naturally preferring the left side. However, Aston Villa know completing the deal will not be easy.
Newcastle signed Barnes from Leicester City for around £38 million and would reportedly demand a fee close to that figure.
The Magpies’ stance could also depend on Bayern Munich’s interest in Anthony Gordon this summer. Still, Villa believe Barnes could be tempted by the move.
Joining Aston Villa would allow the winger to continue playing Champions League football while also moving closer to his family in the Midlands.
