Derby County could soon become the latest English club to experience a dramatic takeover. Latest reports have linked Saudi billionaire Turki Al-Sheikh with a move for the Championship side.
The Rams spent recent years rebuilding after one of the darkest financial periods in the club’s history.
Derby only survived liquidation in 2022 after lifelong supporter David Clowes stepped in to rescue the club during a major crisis.
Since then, Clowes worked steadily to stabilise Derby both financially and on the pitch. However, a new development could now completely transform the future of the club.
According to The Times, Turki Al-Sheikh has formally expressed interest in buying Derby County.
The report claims both the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator already received briefings regarding the situation.
Speculation surrounding the possible takeover exploded after several unusual social media actions from Al-Sheikh during recent days.
The Saudi businessman began following Derby-related accounts online before posting a graphic containing the club’s name alongside a shrugging emoji.
That immediately caught supporters’ attention because Al-Sheikh previously used similar online hints before purchasing Spanish club UD Almeria back in 2019.
During his ownership in Spain, Almeria climbed from the second division into La Liga before he eventually left the club in 2025.
Now, Derby supporters wonder whether something similar could happen at Pride Park.
Al-Sheikh remains one of the most influential figures in world sport because of his enormous involvement in boxing through Riyadh Season events.
He helped organise several of boxing’s biggest heavyweight fights and built huge financial power within global sport.
Reports estimate his wealth at around £2 billion. That level of investment could completely reshape Derby’s ambitions.
Still, the possible takeover already divided opinion among supporters. Many fans deeply appreciate Clowes after saving the club during its financial collapse and worry about losing local ownership.
Others believe Al-Sheikh’s resources could finally give Derby the financial strength needed to seriously compete for Premier League promotion again.
