Manchester United’s summer rebuild is finally beginning to accelerate after weeks of internal planning behind the scenes.
Michael Carrick wants major improvements in midfield before the start of next season following Casemiro’s departure from Old Trafford.
The club also continue assessing several other positions, including striker, full-back and goalkeeper. Still, strengthening central midfield quickly became United’s biggest priority.
Now, the club appear extremely close to landing their first major signing of the summer.
According to Lyall Thomas from Sky Sports, Manchester United and Atalanta are now in the final stages of negotiations for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.
There is growing confidence that both clubs could fully agree on the transfer before the end of the week.
The overall package is expected to reach around £38 million, including add-ons, with the guaranteed fee reportedly close to £34-35 million.
Personal terms are not expected to create any problems as discussions continue. Ederson reportedly already made it clear he wants the move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United representatives recently travelled to Italy to advance negotiations and push the deal closer towards completion.
Interestingly, Atalanta also appeared to signal the midfielder’s imminent departure during their final Serie A match against Fiorentina.
Ederson was left out of the starting lineup entirely as talks with Manchester United intensified.
The 26-year-old now looks set to become Michael Carrick’s first signing since officially taking charge permanently.
