Some careers take roads that nobody could have predicted at the outset.
And Mason Greenwood’s has been complicated than most.
From one of Manchester United’s most exciting academy products to a permanent departure from Old Trafford.
And now, a new chapter beginning to take shape.
Mason Greenwood set to leave Marseille as Fenerbahce make him their top summer transfer target
According to the BBC, Greenwood is the primary transfer target for both presidential candidates competing to lead Fenerbahce, with an announcement on who will take charge of the Turkish club expected on Sunday.
Whoever wins that election, Greenwood is at the top of their list.
That detail speaks volumes about how seriously the move is being considered.
Personal terms are not anticipated to be a problem.
A significant development in a deal that could move quickly once the presidential situation is resolved.
Marseille’s position has also become clear.
Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi said publicly last week that the club is willing to listen to offers for Greenwood.
Greenwood has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille since his arrival.
The numbers, by any objective measure, represent a successful spell.
But the atmosphere around his situation at the club has shifted in recent months.
Earlier this year, new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi was forced to apologise for comments he made defending Greenwood.
Greenwood has had to rebuild his career entirely in France following a highly public period in which charges of attempted rape and assault were dropped in February 2023, before an internal Manchester United investigation concluded he could not play for the club again.
That rebuilding process, in terms of goals and assists, has been successful.
However, the off-pitch narrative has never fully gone away.
And the next move, whatever it turns out to be, is getting closer.
