Mason Greenwood under investigation

Fenerbahce also confirmed they will provide UEFA with the necessary information.

Mason Greenwood is facing a UEFA disciplinary investigation following Fenerbahce‘s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon last month.

Greenwood emerged from Manchester United’s academy and made his senior debut in 2019 at just 17 years old.

The forward scored 32 goals before turning 20, establishing himself as one of United’s brightest young attacking talents.

However, his United career stopped in January 2022 after his arrest following the publication of audio and images online.

Prosecutors charged Greenwood with attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour before dropping all charges in February 2023.

The Crown Prosecution Service cited withdrawn key witnesses and new material that removed a realistic prospect of conviction.

Greenwood then rebuilt his career during a 2023/24 loan spell at Getafe, scoring eight goals across 33 appearances.

Manchester United subsequently sold him to Marseille for £26.7 million in July 2024, including a 50 per cent sell-on clause.

He enjoyed an excellent 2025/26 campaign, recording 26 goals and 11 assists across 45 appearances in all competitions.

Greenwood then joined Fenerbahce in July 2026 and signed a four-year contract with the Turkish giants.

However, the 24-year-old has now become the subject of disciplinary proceedings following an incident in European competition.

UEFA are investigating Greenwood and Fenerbahce team-mate Matteo Guendouzi.

The investigation concerns their behaviour following Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off second leg against Lyon last month.

Fenerbahce won 2–1 on the night and secured a 3–2 aggregate victory to reach the League Phase.

After full-time, Greenwood grabbed his crotch and pulled a face towards the home supporters during the heated scenes.

Guendouzi also made provocative gestures before a confrontation developed involving players and staff from both clubs.

Fenerbahce subsequently confirmed UEFA’s investigation into both players and the club through an official statement. The statement read:

“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA.”

The club added that the proceedings concern ‘our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our club.’

Fenerbahce also confirmed they will provide UEFA with the necessary information, documents and defences during the disciplinary process.

Greenwood could receive a Champions League ban depending on UEFA’s decision. However, the governing body has not announced any punishment.
