FIFA settle €65m transfer case with former Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid star

Lassana Diarra settles landmark €65m FIFA transfer case.

Some legal battles change sport forever before they’re even resolved.

This is one of them.

A dispute that began at Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014 eventually reached the European Court of Justice.

Forcing FIFA to rewrite its entire transfer framework.

And prompted a class action lawsuit involving professional players’ unions across the continent.

However, on Monday, it finally came to an end.

Lassana Diarra settles landmark €65m FIFA transfer case

According to France24, former PSG, Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra has reached a settlement with FIFA and the Belgian Football Association, bringing to a close his long-running €65 million legal battle over player transfer rules.

The settlement closes a case that has been building since 2014.

When Diarra left Lokomotiv Moscow after the Russian club drastically reduced his salary.

Lokomotiv deemed the termination of his contract unfair and demanded €20 million in compensation, later reduced to €10.5 million.

FIFA ordered Diarra to pay, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld that ruling, and the ripple effects were immediate and damaging.

Belgian club Charleroi wanted to sign him.

But under FIFA regulations, any new club could be held jointly liable for paying those sanctions.

Charleroi walked away.

Diarra lost a contract. And his career was effectively curtailed by regulatory framework.

The same that the Court of Justice of the European Union would later rule to be incompatible with EU law.

That ruling forced FIFA to adopt an interim regulatory framework and begin rewriting its transfer rules.

A seismic shift in the governance of player movement at the highest level.

Diarra pushed further.

He announced in October 2024 that he would pursue the Belgian courts to enforce the CJEU ruling.

Filing the €65 million damages claim that has now, finally, been settled.

The settlement means that the case which forced FIFA to change the rules that govern every transfer in world football is now formally closed.

Diarra may not have walked away with €65 million.

But he leaves the game fundamentally altered by what he set in motion.
