Harry Maguire set to leave Manchester United

Manchester United open to Maguire sale just months after handing defender new contract.

Some contract extensions mean everything.

A show of faith.

And a signal that a player is genuinely valued.

However some mean very little at all.

Harry Maguire signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United in April.

A deal that extended his stay at Old Trafford until 2027 and appeared to settle his future.

Yet, two months later, the board are already open to selling him.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United are now believed to be open to offers for Maguire at the right price.

With sources indicating the 33-year-old has been offered to a couple of clubs and that the club would not rule out letting him go this summer.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown delivered a blunt assessment.

“Harry Maguire’s future isn’t guaranteed,” Brown told Football Insider.

Maguire has been one of the standout performers since Michael Carrick took charge.

A key figure in the remarkable second-half-of-season turnaround that delivered Champions League qualification.

Thus convincing INEOS to hand Carrick the job permanently.

However, the timing of all this couldn’t be more uncomfortable.

Thomas Tuchel left Maguire out of England’s World Cup squad.

A significant omission from a player who won 64 caps for his country and was central to three consecutive major tournament runs.

Now, the club that extended his contract in April are entertaining offers.

Carrick, for his part, is understood to want Maguire to stay.

But as Brown noted, the board will likely have the final say.

A contract signed in April.

Yet, talks about a sale in June.

It’s the kind of decision that might look very different depending on how United’s defensive recruitment goes this summer.
