Some summer windows have a moment where the scale of ambition becomes clear.
For Manchester United, that moment may have just arrived.
Midfield reinforcement was the priority.
And two deals are already taking shape.
Hiowever, a third is being prepared.
This time for one of the Premier League’s most commanding defenders.
Manchester United prepare offer for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero
According to Gastón Edul, one of Argentina’s most respected and reliable football journalists, Manchester United want to sign Romero and are preparing a formal offer for the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back.
The update is significant.
Edul doesn’t speculate, he reports.
And the detail he’s confirmed puts this in the concrete rather than the rumour category.
Romero is expected to leave Tottenham this summer after what was a deeply difficult season for the north London club.
Who narrowly avoided relegation under Roberto De Zerbi despite Romero himself missing the final months of the campaign with a knee injury picked up in April.
This isn’t the first time Manchester United have tried.
Reports in September 2024 claimed Tottenham had rejected an approach from Old Trafford.
A sign that the interest goes back further than this window and that United have been tracking Romero for some time.
However, the difference now is that Tottenham’s position has weakened considerably.
A fee of around €65 million has been discussed in various reports.
Yet, whether Tottenham accept, or hold out for more, will define whether this becomes one of the defining transfers of the summer or another near miss.
But United are moving.
The offer is coming.
And for the first time in a long time, Tottenham might not be strong enough to say no.
