Some positions go unaddressed for a whole summer.
The transfer window opens, closes, and a club still hasn’t solved the problem they identified back in January.
Manchester United cannot afford that happening at left-back.
With Tyrell Malacia leaving and Patrick Dorgu operating as a winger rather than a full-back under Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw is currently the only recognised senior left-back at Old Trafford.
For a club returning to the Champions League, that simply isn’t good enough.
Manchester United set to sign former Chelsea youngster Lewis Hall as he emerges as primary target
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are continuing to monitor Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, a player they could look to act on if the opportunity presents itself, while Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has also emerged as a potential alternative target.
The report also clarifies United’s position on Iliman Ndiaye.
However, Hall is the more concrete pursuit.
At 21 years old, the Newcastle defender has established himself as one of the most technically gifted young left-backs in English football.
Crucially, sources indicate Hall is open to the move.
He is described as keen on a switch to Old Trafford, viewing United as a significant step in his development and drawn specifically by the prospect of Champions League football.
Fulham wouldn’t make Robinson easy to prise away either.
With a new head coach arriving at Craven Cottage, the picture around his future remains unclear.
Newcastle paid £28 million for Hall from Chelsea in 2024 and would demand significantly more for a player who has developed considerably since.
His absence from England’s World Cup squad adds another layer.
If Hall believes United’s bigger platform gives him a better route back into the national team conversation, that could accelerate his thinking.
But the priority is clear.
A senior, proven left-back is needed.
And Hall is the name at the top of the list.
