Newcastle United are continuing their preparations for the 2026/27 season as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad.
The Magpies failed to secure European football and now want to add quality across several positions to push for European qualification next season.. One area under close review is the goalkeeping department.
Changes are already taking place behind the scenes. Aaron Ramsdale has returned to his parent club following the end of his loan spell.
Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy is expected to leave when his contract expires. Nick Pope could also depart this summer amid links with Ipswich Town.
Newcastle have already signed Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims. However, the Frenchman will not be the first-choice goalkeeper for the Magpies.
As a result, Newcastle have stepped up their search for a new long-term number one.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have renewed their interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford. The 23-year-old has emerged as the club’s top target.
Newcastle have already made fresh contact with Manchester City as they explore a possible deal. However, the move is not progressing quickly.
Trafford is currently with England at the 2026 World Cup and wants to focus fully on the tournament. The goalkeeper reportedly does not want to make a final decision on his future until after England’s campaign ends.
That timeline could create a problem for Newcastle. The club would prefer to complete key transfer business before pre-season begins.
Manchester City are open to selling Trafford if the player pushes for an exit. They are looking more than £30M for the goalkeeper.
