A former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker faces a huge legal battle after a Spanish court convicted him of sexual assault.
He received an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence following a ruling from the Provincial Court of Valencia.
The case relates to an incident that took place at his home in September 2024 while he played for Valencia. Prosecutors pushed a prison sentence of ten and a half years during the trial.
However, the court ultimately handed Rafa Mir a slightly lower punishment. Judges ruled that the complainant did not give consent during the incident.
The court also stated that her testimony met the requirements needed to support a conviction. As a result, judges awarded the victim €64,000 in compensation.
The case began after a 21-year-old woman filed a complaint against Mir. The woman met the footballer at a nightclub in Valencia before later traveling to her home.
Authorities arrested Mir shortly after receiving the complaint. The trial took place on May 28. Mir denied wrongdoing throughout the proceedings.
The striker insisted that everything that happened was consensual. Following the verdict, Mir again rejected the court’s findings.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers player confirmed that he intends to challenge the decision. He also stated that he still trusts the justice system.
Mir was not the only person involved in the case. Footballer Pablo Jara, who was present on the night, also faced trial.
The court sentenced Jara to two and a half years in prison. Judges also ordered him to pay a fine of €6,280.
While Mir prepares his appeal, uncertainty surrounds his football future. The striker remains under contract with Sevilla until June 2027. Last season, he spent time on loan at Elche.
However, the club decided against activating their option to sign him permanently. Mir previously spent three and a half years at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The former Premier League club signed him from Valencia in January 2018. Despite arriving with promise, he made only four competitive appearances without scoring a goal at Molineux.
The Fourth Section of the Valencia Court has sentenced the footballer of Elche CF, and formerly of Valencia CF, to eight and a half years in prison. He was tried on May 28 for sexual assault and causing injury.
