Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set for Premier League return as manager

Solskjaer could be preparing for another Premier League challenge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could soon make a surprise return to Premier League management. The former Manchester United striker and manager has emerged as a leading candidate for a vacancy in England.

Solskjaer remains one of the most recognisable figures in modern Premier League football. His managerial career has already included spells with Cardiff City and Manchester United.

The Norwegian left Old Trafford in 2021 after almost three years in charge. He then stepped away from management for four years before returning to the dugout.

In 2025, Solskjaer accepted the head coach role at Turkish club Besiktas. However, that spell proved short-lived. The 53-year-old lasted only nine months before the club dismissed him.

Besiktas made the decision after failing to progress through the Conference League play-offs. Since then, Solskjaer has remained without a managerial position. That situation could soon change.

According to BBC Sport, Ipswich Town have added Solskjaer to their shortlist following Kieran McKenna’s departure. McKenna stepped down despite guiding the club back to the Premier League.

Ipswich now face a crucial decision as they prepare for life in the top flight. The report claims Solskjaer ranks among the leading candidates for the role.

Former Wolves and Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil is also under consideration. The possibility of a Premier League return could appeal strongly to Solskjaer.

The Norwegian’s previous spell at Manchester United produced several memorable moments. He initially took charge as caretaker manager in December 2018.

After that, just like Michael Carrick, the former striker earned the position on a permanent basis. Across 168 matches, he recorded 91 victories, 37 draws and 40 defeats.

Now, nearly five years after leaving Manchester United, Solskjaer could be preparing for another Premier League challenge.
