Some careers take turns that nobody saw coming.
Marcus Rashford went to Barcelona on loan.
He scored the goal that won them La Liga.
And he fell in love with the city.
Yet after everything, Rashford could end up at Tottenham.
Tottenham preparing formal Marcus Rashford offer as United forward’s preference for move abroad faces major obstacle
According to i paper, Tottenham Hotspur have moved into internal discussions around a formal proposal for Marcus Rashford, with Roberto De Zerbi understood to be a significant admirer of the Manchester United forward.
The complication is Rashford himself.
His preference is to move abroad again, or to return to Manchester United and reintegrate into the squad under Michael Carrick.
However, moving to another Premier League club is not currently on his radar.
That creates a significant hurdle for Spurs to overcome.
But one they appear determined to clear.
The financial picture adds further complexity.
United and Rashford have agreed a release clause of £40 million for this summer.
Tottenham are unwilling to meet that figure outright.
And are instead exploring whether a lower opening offer might open negotiations.
Rashford, for his part, is reportedly aware that a move will require a financial sacrifice.
He is willing to take a substantial pay cut.
That willingness changes the dynamic in ways that could ultimately make this work.
14 goals and 12 assists for Barcelona last season, winning a La Liga title.
Spurs believe that if a compromise can be reached on fee and wages, they could be signing a player at the peak of his powers and with something significant still to prove in English football.
Manchester United want the wages off the books.
Another loan to Barcelona has been categorically ruled out.
And Rashford’s ideal outcome and football’s financial reality are slowly converging on a destination he didn’t expect.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may be where the next chapter is written.
