Cillian Murphy is a name already known far beyond football because of one of Ireland’s greatest actors. The Hollywood star built his reputation through major roles in 28 Days Later, Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer.
His portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer earned him an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. Now, Arsenal are chasing another Cillian Murphy, although this one is making his name on the football pitch.
The Gunners have turned their attention towards Ireland as they continue monitoring elite young talent across Europe. Arsenal have already enjoyed a historic period under Mikel Arteta after winning the Premier League title.
However, the club still want to strengthen every level of the squad, including their long-term academy and development pipeline.
According to the Irish Examiner, Arsenal are firmly in the mix to sign Cork City teenager Cillian Murphy, who is close to agreeing a cross-channel transfer.
The Gunners have watched the 16-year-old throughout the season. They also sent representatives to Turner’s Cross last Friday, when Cork City beat Murphy’s hometown club Treaty United 4-0.
Murphy produced another man-of-the-match performance in that fixture. Borussia Dortmund scouts also attended the game, and the Bundesliga giants could sign him immediately.
However, the report adds that Murphy will likely stay with Cork City until July 2027. Brexit rules currently prevent him from joining a UK club before his 18th birthday.
A pre-contract agreement this summer now looks like the most likely outcome. That structure would allow Cork City to keep Murphy for the first half of next season.
Murphy can operate centrally or in wide areas and uses both feet effectively. He also became Ireland’s third-youngest U21 debutant during the recent draw against Qatar in Croatia.
Now, Arsenal must decide whether to move quickly before interest around their Hollywood namesake becomes a major transfer race.
