Manchester United and Chelsea continue searching for defensive reinforcements as both clubs prepare for the next season.
While each side has focused on strengthening different areas during the summer window, improving the left side of defence has become an important objective.
The World Cup has also provided clubs with another opportunity to assess several leading transfer targets.
Strong performances on the biggest stage have only increased competition for some of Europe’s most sought-after players.
One defender, in particular, has seen his stock rise significantly after starring for his country during the tournament.
Arsenal had already positioned themselves as one of his main admirers, but the race has now become considerably more complicated.
According to Record, Manchester United and Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the pursuit of Sporting CP defender Maxi Araujo.
Araujo has impressed throughout the World Cup, registering two goals and one assist in Uruguay’s opening two group matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
The report states that Manchester United sent representatives to watch the 26-year-old during Uruguay’s draw with Cape Verde.
Chelsea are also monitoring the versatile left-sided player as they search for a replacement following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. Arsenal’s interest is not new.
Mikel Arteta’s side reportedly made initial contact with Araujo in April after being impressed by his displays during Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final meetings with the Gunners.
Sporting remain in a strong negotiating position. Araujo still has three years remaining on his contract, which includes an €80 million (£69.3 million) release clause.
With three Premier League clubs now competing for his signature, Sporting may soon face increasing pressure. However, any interested side will likely have to meet the Portuguese club’s substantial valuation.
