Some players need a change of scenery to rediscover themselves.
A fresh start. A manager who believes in them. A club where they can be central rather than peripheral.
James McAtee needs exactly that.
And West Ham believe they’re the club to provide it.
West Ham open talks to sign James McAtee from Nottingham Forest
According to TEAMtalk, West Ham have opened discussions over a move for McAtee, with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo keen to reunite with the 23-year-old he personally championed at Nottingham Forest just twelve months ago, and the Hammers prepared to offer a package similar to the £30 million Forest paid Manchester City for him last summer.
The irony of the situation is not lost on anyone.
It was Nuno who strongly backed Forest’s move for McAtee last year.
Believing the former England Under-21 international had the qualities to become an important first-team player.
What followed was a frustrating campaign.
Opportunities were limited.
Morgan Gibbs-White remained indispensable in the number ten position.
McAtee found himself playing second fiddle when he should have been a leading man.
However, with circumstances having changed entirely, the player is open to a fresh challenge.
And the manager who believed in him first is ready to take him somewhere he can genuinely thrive.
The financial context at West Ham makes this move logical.
Mateus Fernandes has departed to Tottenham for £85 million.
And Crysencio Summerville is expected to follow in a deal worth significant money.
The Hammers have funds to spend, and Nuno wants proven Premier League quality as the foundation of their Championship promotion push.
McAtee fits that profile precisely.
Technically refined. Capable of operating between the lines as a creative force. A player who, in the right environment, showed at Manchester City’s academy level that he could produce moments of genuine quality at pace.
He just needs the platform to prove it consistently at senior level.
West Ham can offer him exactly that.
As well as the reunion with the manager who first saw what he could become.
