Mohamed Salah makes decision on his future after controversial World Cup exit

Mohamed Salah and Egypt’s historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end against defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16.

The Pharaohs had reached the knockout stages after recording their first-ever World Cup victories against New Zealand and Australia earlier in the tournament.

However, their campaign ended in controversy. Egypt surrendered a two-goal lead during the closing stages of the match against Argentina.

The game sparked fierce criticism in Egypt after appeals for two penalties were waved away. Meanwhile, a VAR decision also ruled out a goal during the encounter.

Head coach Hossam Hassan publicly questioned whether officiating decisions had favoured Lionel Messi’s side following the dramatic defeat.

Despite the disappointment, Mohamed Salah further strengthened his standing in Egyptian football history.

The captain played through a hamstring injury earlier in the tournament. He also scored once and created 15 chances across five matches to become Egypt’s leading World Cup goalscorer.

His international exploits arrived shortly after the end of an iconic spell at Liverpool. Salah left Anfield after agreeing to terminate his contract a year early.

According to TEAMtalk, Salah has now narrowed his options down to either the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer. However, he is still attracting interest from clubs in Europe.

The report states that Saudi Arabia remains the strongest possibility, although a move to the United States continues to appeal to the Egyptian forward.

Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli are viewed as attractive destinations due to their close proximity to Egypt, while Neom Sports Club also remain an option.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami and San Diego FC continue to monitor the situation from MLS.

For now, Mohamed Salah is taking his time before making a final decision on what could become one of the biggest free transfers of the summer.
