Arsenal offer £34M for William Saliba replacement

With Saliba facing an extended absence, the Gunners must now decide whether to turn their interest into a concrete move.

Arsenal face a major defensive problem ahead of their Premier League title defence following William Saliba‘s injury setback.

The French centre-back aggravated a long-standing back problem while representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was forced off during the semi-final defeat against Spain.

However, specialists have not recommended surgery. Saliba will instead begin a managed rehabilitation programme and could miss an extended period.

Therefore, Arsenal are exploring the market for defensive cover as Mikel Arteta prepares to start the new campaign without one of his key players.

The Gunners have considered several options but remain determined to strengthen their defence without committing another huge transfer fee.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have now been offered the chance to sign Sporting CP defender Zeno Debast.

Intermediaries have put the 22-year-old forward as an option, with the Belgium international potentially available for around £34M.

Arsenal have not yet opened formal negotiations. However, they have not ruled out pursuing a deal after learning about his potential availability.

Moreover, Arsenal’s scouting department already admired Debast before Saliba’s injury created an immediate need for additional defensive depth.

The Belgian endured an injury-disrupted 2025/26 campaign, making 17 league appearances for Sporting CP.

His fitness problems also affected his World Cup involvement. Although Belgium selected him for the tournament, he failed to make an appearance.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have also considered Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa but are unwilling to meet his club’s valuation.

That situation could make Debast a more affordable option as Arteta searches for someone capable of providing immediate cover while also developing into a long-term defensive option.

Manchester United have previously tracked Debast, although Arsenal are currently only assessing the opportunity rather than advancing formal talks.

With Saliba facing an extended absence, the Gunners must now decide whether to turn their interest into a concrete move for the £34M-rated defender.
