Manchester United show interest in two Serie A defenders

United continue assessing defensive targets before the transfer window closes.

Manchester United head into the new season with renewed optimism after securing a return to the Champions League.

Michael Carrick guided the club to a top-three Premier League finish following his appointment midway through last season, laying the foundations for a fresh era at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have backed their manager in the transfer market. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson have all arrived.

Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro and Radek Vitek have departed. United have also enjoyed a productive preseason.

They recovered from an opening defeat to Wrexham with victories over Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid before upcoming friendlies against Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

Despite those additions, defensive reinforcements remain on the agenda. United have explored several options at left-back, including Lewis Hall, Antonee Robinson and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Also, they are looking for versatile defenders capable of filling multiple roles. According to The Telegraph and Quotidiano Sportivo, Manchester United are actively tracking Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini and Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi.

The report states that Scalvini has been monitored by United for three consecutive years.

United have also renewed contact over Lucumi, who has emerged as another leading defensive target.

Bologna are open to selling the Colombian if the right offer arrives, but Juventus, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest are also in the race.

Lucumi’s left-footed profile, pace and comfort in a high defensive line make him an attractive option for Carrick.

United are also planning ahead with Matthijs de Ligt recovering from back surgery, despite Harry Maguire signing a new contract earlier this year.

Now, the reports suggest both Scalvini and Lucumi remain firmly under consideration as United continue assessing defensive targets before the transfer window closes.
