Aston Villa enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season under Unai Emery, securing Champions League qualification and winning the Europa League.
Villa finished fourth in the Premier League before beating Freiburg 3-0 to lift their first major trophy since 1996.
Ollie Watkins played a crucial role in that success, scoring 21 goals across all competitions for Emery’s side.
The striker then represented England at the 2026 World Cup, mainly operating as an option behind Harry Kane.
However, Watkins has attracted significant transfer interest as Villa prepare for another demanding season.
Transfer News Live reported that Watkins has an agreement in principle over personal terms with Al-Hilal.
The Saudi club are preparing to contact Villa after Watkins showed openness towards a potential move.
Villa, however, reportedly intend to keep the England international and consider him part of Emery’s plans.
That stance has not stopped the club from exploring further options to strengthen their attack before the deadline.
According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo, Aston Villa have enquired about signing Christopher Nkunku from AC Milan.
The Italian club value the French attacker at around € 35 million following his season in Milan.
Villa have reportedly approached both Milan and Nkunku’s representatives to explore the possibility of completing a deal.
Newcastle, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Roma have also made enquiries about the Frenchman.
Villa previously pursued Nicolas Jackson as they looked to strengthen Emery’s attacking options this summer.
However, their loan deal for Alejandro Garnacho prevents them from taking another Chelsea player on loan.
Finding an acceptable structure for a permanent Jackson transfer has also proved difficult.
Despite their Nkunku enquiry, Villa remain determined to retain Watkins rather than sanction his departure. Villa know about Al-Hilal’s long-standing interest but plan to keep their striker.
Watkins remains firmly in Emery’s plans as Villa prepare for another Premier League and European campaign.
