Real Madrid have endured a frustrating summer as they attempt to strengthen Jose Mourinho’s squad before the transfer window closes.
The Spanish giants entered the market after finishing the 2025-26 campaign without a major trophy.
Their season featured managerial upheaval, with Xabi Alonso departing before Alvaro Arbeloa completed the campaign in charge.
Madrid have since appointed Mourinho for his second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu and started reshaping the squad.
Bernardo Silva arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, while Denzel Dumfries joined for 20 million euros.
However, midfield recruitment has caused considerably more frustration during the closing stages of the summer window.
Madrid explored a deal for Rodri after identifying the Manchester City midfielder as a potential addition to their squad.
Barcelona eventually won the race for the Spain international, leaving Madrid assessing alternative options in central midfield.
One familiar name subsequently returned to their radar as the club considered possible solutions before the deadline.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid have been tracking Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi following their failure to land Rodri.
However, Mikel Arteta has effectively closed the door on a summer departure for the 27-year-old midfielder.
Arteta still regards Zubimendi as an important member of his squad despite reducing his minutes during the closing stages last season.
The Arsenal manager believes the midfielder’s workload contributed to that reduced involvement after an exhausting campaign.
Zubimendi played extensively throughout the season before slipping down the midfield hierarchy during the decisive final weeks.
Arsenal therefore intend to manage his workload differently rather than consider allowing him to leave the Emirates Stadium.
That position represents another setback for Madrid as they evaluate their midfield following the collapse of their Rodri pursuit.
With Zubimendi seemingly unavailable, Madrid must decide whether to identify another target or trust their existing midfield options.
