Newcastle United make move for Belgian winger

Newcastle have now stepped up their pursuit of another young attacking option before the September 1 deadline.

Newcastle United have entered a new era under Matthias Jaissle after making major changes during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies produced mixed preseason results before opening their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Their summer preparations included victories over Darlington and Carlisle United before defeats against Everton and Bayer Leverkusen.

Newcastle then finished preseason with a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg before turning their attention towards competitive action.

Meanwhile, the club have completely reshaped their squad after several high-profile departures during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham signed Sandro Tonali for £100 million, while Anthony Gordon moved to Barcelona and Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal.

Newcastle responded by investing heavily in younger players as part of their new recruitment strategy under Jaissle.

They signed Lukas Hornicek, Ewen Jaouen, Amar Dedic, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure.

The Magpies are also advancing negotiations for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez in a deal worth around £50 million.

However, Newcastle have now stepped up their pursuit of another young attacking option before the September 1 deadline.

According to L’Equipe, Newcastle United have entered formal negotiations to sign Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo and submitted an offer worth around €40 million.

The proposal does not include bonuses, while Lille president Olivier Letang remains determined to keep the 21-year-old.

Lille particularly do not want to sanction his departure without first securing a replacement before the transfer window closes.

However, Fernandez-Pardo continues pushing for an exit despite Lille offering him the prospect of playing Champions League football.

Atletico Madrid have also shown interest and previously made an offer worth €35 million for the Belgian winger.

Newcastle possess greater financial resources than Atletico and could therefore test Lille’s resolve with a stronger financial package.

Fernandez-Pardo joined Lille in the summer of 2024 and remains under contract with the French club until 2029.
