Manchester United have started the 2026–27 Premier League season with concerns after losing 2–0 against newly promoted Hull City.
United have therefore increased their transfer activity as they try to strengthen the squad before the September 1 deadline.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already arrived, while Carlos Baleba is also closing in on a move.
However, Carrick also wants another left-back because Luke Shaw cannot be expected to play twice every week.
United have considered several options as they search for the right solution during the final days of the window.
Their interest has focused heavily on two defenders, although completing either deal this summer presents different problems.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are unlikely to spend £30 million on Alejandro Balde this summer and plan to reignite their pursuit of Lewis Hall next year.
Newcastle United have already made it clear that Hall is not available during the current transfer window. As a result, United have explored Balde as a possible alternative before the deadline.
Barcelona value Balde at around £30 million and do not want to sanction another loan move.
That stance creates a problem because United would prefer a temporary deal rather than spending heavily on the defender.
Relations between United and Barcelona have also become strained following the failed permanent transfer of Marcus Rashford.
Barcelona wanted to reduce the agreed £26 million fee, but United refused to reopen negotiations.
That situation could now influence discussions over Balde, particularly if Barcelona remain unwilling to compromise on their demands.
Therefore, a permanent Balde transfer currently appears unlikely, while Hall remains their preferred long-term left-back target.
