Manchester United striker set to leave on loan

The loan will run until the end of the 2026–27 season and will not contain an option to buy.

Manchester United completed a significant midfield rebuild during the summer transfer window under head coach Michael Carrick.

Casemiro departed at the end of his contract, prompting United to reshape the centre of their midfield with several additions.

Carlos Baleba arrived from Brighton, while Andrey Santos joined from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans moved from Aston Villa.

Additionally, Karl Darlow joined as a free agent, although United were unable to secure another left-back before the September 1 deadline.

Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall was among their targets, but no agreement materialised before the English transfer window closed.

Meanwhile, United rejected a late £10 million loan offer from Everton for Joshua Zirkzee after other potential moves failed to progress.

However, clubs elsewhere in Europe can still complete transfers, allowing United to sanction another temporary departure.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United striker Chido Obi is set to join Willem II on a season-long loan.

The Dutch transfer window remains open beyond the Premier League deadline, allowing the Eredivisie club to complete the move.

Romano reported that United have authorised Obi to undergo his medical ahead of finalising the agreement.

Furthermore, the loan will run until the end of the 2026–27 season and will not contain an option to buy.

United have therefore retained long-term control over the striker while giving him an opportunity to gain regular senior experience.

Obi’s departure comes despite United not adding another forward before the English transfer deadline.

The club had also considered allowing Harry Amass to leave temporarily, but their failure to sign a left-back prevented that move.

Nevertheless, United have approved Obi’s exit as they continue managing opportunities for younger members of Carrick’s squad.

On the pitch, United have collected three points from their opening two Premier League matches.

They suffered a 2–0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City before responding with a 5–2 victory over Ipswich Town.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick in that Old Trafford win, while Bryan Mbeumo also found the net.

United now prepare to travel to Everton, while Obi is expected to complete his temporary switch to Willem II.
