Manchester United reject chance to sign former Real Madrid star for free

United have also ruled out pursuing other available free agents.

Manchester United completed a significant squad overhaul during the summer but finished deadline day without addressing every position.

Michael Carrick’s side added Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as part of a midfield rebuild.

Meanwhile, United sanctioned 24 departures during their efforts to reshape the squad. Rasmus Hojlund joined Napoli for £38M, while Casemiro moved to Inter Miami.

Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia also departed after reaching the end of their contracts.

However, United could not secure a senior left-back before the transfer deadline. The club also blocked Joshua Zirkzee from joining Everton on loan.

Their decision meant United completed deadline day without a new signing for the first time since 2019.

The closure of the transfer window does not prevent clubs from strengthening with players who are currently free agents.

However, United have decided against using that market to make another addition despite having the opportunity to consider an experienced defender.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are not interested in signing former Real Madrid defender David Alaba.

United have also ruled out pursuing other available free agents following the closure of the summer transfer window.

Alaba’s age and high wage demands are reportedly important factors behind United’s position. The club believe signing him would represent the type of recruitment mistake they have made previously.

That stance reflects United’s disciplined approach after their summer overhaul rather than making another addition simply because a player is available.

Carrick has experienced a mixed opening to the Premier League campaign. United lost 2-0 against Hull City before responding with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.

They then drew 2-2 with Everton in their latest league fixture, with Benjamin Sesko finding the net for United.

Despite missing out on a left-back before the deadline, United are not planning to address that issue through the free-agent market.
