Chelsea lead Manchester United in race for Barcelona star

Chelsea are assessing several midfield options as Alonso considers further changes following Fernandez’s departure.

Chelsea and Manchester United both reshaped their squads significantly during the summer transfer window ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Xabi Alonso oversaw major changes at Stamford Bridge following the departures of several established players.

Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City for a record fee, while Nicolas Jackson and Marc Cucurella also left Chelsea during the window.

The Blues responded by strengthening Alonso’s squad with Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Danny Welbeck among their additions.

Chelsea have since collected six points from their opening three Premier League matches, beating Fulham and Brighton before losing against Arsenal.

Manchester United also concentrated heavily on recruitment after appointing Michael Carrick as permanent head coach.

United strengthened their midfield by signing Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos, while Casemiro departed the club.

Carrick’s side have taken four points from their opening three league matches following games against Hull City, Ipswich Town and Everton.

Both clubs are now monitoring another potential midfield addition ahead of the January transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are currently ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal.

The 19-year-old has featured in all five of Barcelona’s matches across all competitions this season.

However, Rodri’s arrival from Manchester City has reportedly created uncertainty surrounding Bernal’s long-term role at the Camp Nou.

Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the midfielder, but Chelsea are considered the more likely destination if their interest develops.

Bernal remains under contract with Barcelona until 2029, meaning the Spanish club would be in a strong position during any negotiations.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is also high on their shortlist. Meanwhile, Lamine Camara could return to consideration after a previous move collapsed.

For now, Bernal remains another possible January target, with Chelsea currently positioned ahead
