Manchester United could return to the transfer market in January following an inconsistent opening to the 2026/27 campaign.
Michael Carrick’s side have collected five points from their opening five Premier League matches, leaving them 12th in the table.
United concentrated heavily on rebuilding their midfield during the summer, committing around £155 million to strengthen that area.
Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arrived as part of the overhaul, while Casemiro departed Old Trafford.
However, United were unable to add another established striker to provide greater competition for Benjamin Sesko during the summer.
That position has now become a priority ahead of the January transfer window, with the club assessing potential additions.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are considering a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. His representatives have also contacted United as the club assesses its options.
Director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly values Mateta’s Premier League experience and goalscoring record. The 29-year-old has scored 62 goals across 203 Palace appearances.
United’s need for another striker has increased because Sesko is currently sidelined with a recurring shin problem.
Mateta has been seeking a departure from Palace and has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.
Palace could therefore face a decision in January, which represents their final opportunity to receive a transfer fee before his contract expires.
United could also look to move Joshua Zirkzee on during the winter window, with Palace maintaining a long-standing interest in the Dutch forward.
For now, United continue to assess Mateta as they consider strengthening Carrick’s attacking options in January
