Manchester United concentrated heavily on rebuilding their midfield during the summer transfer window.
Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba arrived as part of an investment worth around £155 million.
However, Michael Carrick’s side have struggled to translate that spending into immediate results. United have collected only five points from their opening five Premier League matches.
Their Carabao Cup campaign also ended early against Brighton. Attention is already turning towards how the squad could be strengthened further.
According to 4-4-2.ch, Manchester United are leading the race to sign Como winger Assane Diao. United have been tracking the 21-year-old for some time.
Their scouts have recently watched him against Genoa, Parma and Frosinone. The club’s recruitment team are convinced by Diao’s qualities following those scouting trips.
Diao has established himself as a regular for Como and has already scored three league goals this season.
He can operate from either wing and has impressed with his pace, power and ability in one-on-one situations.
However, United face substantial competition for his signature. Liverpool, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton and Brentford are also interested.
Atalanta have monitored Diao since his arrival at Como in early 2025, while Roma are admirers. Como have yet to receive a concrete offer for the Senegal international.
Diao remains under contract with the Italian club until 2029. Como are also under no financial pressure to sell, particularly while competing in the Champions League this season.
The Serie A club could demand around £43 million for the winger. United’s extensive scouting suggests their interest is already well established.
However, they would need to overcome significant competition and Como’s strong negotiating position to secure Diao.
