Chelsea have made an encouraging start to their first Premier League campaign under Xabi Alonso. The Blues sit fourth after collecting 13 points from their opening seven league matches.
Chelsea suffered a difficult 3-0 defeat against Brentford during their early adjustment period. However, their recent performances have provided a strong response.
Alonso’s side thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 before recording a 2-0 victory away at Everton. Chelsea could now look towards further defensive reinforcements as Alonso continues shaping his squad.
Real Madrid are also considering their options after an imperfect start in La Liga. They sit third with 21 points from nine matches, having recorded seven victories and two defeats.
Both clubs have now turned their attention towards the same Premier League defender. According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea retain an interest in Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, who is also a target for Real Madrid.
Chelsea’s interest in the 24-year-old stretches back to his time at Bologna. The Blues previously attempted to sign Calafiori while he was discussing a move to Arsenal.
Real Madrid have also identified the Italy international as a transfer target. Arsenal value Calafiori highly, and a potential deal could require an offer worth as much as €100 million.
His versatility could make him particularly attractive to Chelsea. Calafiori can operate at both centre-back and left-back. However, there is currently no indication that the defender wants to leave Arsenal.
Calafiori has become an important member of Mikel Arteta’s squad, although fitness problems have occasionally limited his playing time. Arsenal would also face the prospect of strengthening a direct Premier League rival by selling him to Chelsea.
That could make any potential Stamford Bridge move particularly difficult. Real Madrid would provide another possible destination should Arsenal ever become willing to negotiate.
For now, Chelsea’s longstanding interest remains active, while Real Madrid are also monitoring Calafiori as both clubs assess potential defensive additions.
