Manchester United endured a difficult night in Italy during their latest Champions League fixture. Michael Carrick’s side travelled to face Como on Wednesday but suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat.
United struggled to control the contest as the Italian side exposed their defensive problems. The result increased pressure on Carrick ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth.
Bruno Fernandes also criticised his manager’s tactics following another disappointing performance. However, an alarming incident had occurred away from the stadium while the United captain was in Italy.
According to BBC Sport, Fernandes’ Cheshire home was burgled while he played against Como on Wednesday. The 32-year-old’s family were not inside the property when the break-in occurred.
The intruders remained inside for less than five minutes before police arrived at the scene. Manchester United are supporting Fernandes following the incident.
The incident came while Fernandes was representing United in their Champions League fixture.
Fernandes has played for the Old Trafford club since joining from Sporting in January 2020. The Portugal midfielder also remains United’s captain despite his comments following the defeat in Italy.
United will not discipline Fernandes for publicly criticising Carrick’s tactics after the Como match. His burglary follows other incidents involving footballers whose homes have been targeted during matches.
Manchester City defender Ruben Dias previously had his Cheshire home burgled while playing against Galatasaray in January. Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez have also previously suffered burglaries in the same area.
Fernandes must now deal with the aftermath while United prepare to return to Premier League action. Carrick’s side face Bournemouth on Sunday as they attempt to recover from their damaging European defeat.
